Recently, I received the following question: is my skin too dry for setting powder?
I’ve been asked this (or a similar) question several times, and actually, the answer is more complicated than how dry or oily your skin is. First off, setting powder is used to set liquid foundation. So if you’re using a powder foundation, then you don’t need to worry about setting powder.
When you use liquid foundation, one thing is for sure. If you have oily skin, then you definitely need to use setting powder (or this alternative). If you’re in the normal to dry range, then whether or not you need setting powder doesn’t really depend a lot on how dry your skin is. It really depends on how liquidy your foundation is!
If you’re using a creme/mousse type foundation with normal to dry skin, then there is a good chance you may not need setting powder. In fact, using it could make your makeup look more cakey. What I usually do is feel my face after I apply a new foundation. If foundation is coming off onto your fingers, then go ahead and use a setting powder. If not, test it out. Try going a day without setting powder. If you’re feeling like your foundation is wearing off throughout the day, then next time you use it, try the setting powder.
Almost all thin and runny liquid foundations are going to need a setting, but if you’re wondering whether or not you should use it, do the same thing as I described above. Trial and error is the best way to figure out what’s right for you because everyone’s skin is different!
That all being said, the dryness of your skin does play a factor. If you have normal skin, then you will probably only be able to get away with no setting powder for those thicker creams. If you have dry skin, you might not even be able to use those thicker cream foundations but be able to get away with no setting powder on a thicker liquid foundation.
Hope this helps those of you who are wondering about this. If you have any questions, please feel free to comment below or contact me!
