A few weeks ago, I was walking through Walmart’s makeup aisle, not expecting to buy anything, but that was before I saw this awesome looking liner with adorable packaging! Hard Candy created a real eye catcher here. Just look at how matte that eye liner looks.
One thing about this eyeliner that particular sparked my interest was its unique design. With 3 different shaped felt spheres forming the tip, Hard Candy’s High Drama Liner was different than any eye liner I’d ever used. I was a little weary at first (to be expected), but at the $5 price tag, I figured why not!
Unfortunately… HUGE MISTAKE. Okay…. so I’m exaggerating a little bit. But in all seriousness, I absolutely hate this eye liner. Definitely not worth the $5 compared to my Jordana Fabu Liner, which Walgreens carries for $2. So why do I hate it so much?
Unique Felt Tip
I applaud hard candy for striving to try something different from the standard pen like felt tip eye liners we’re used to seeing, but this one was definitely a flop. In fact, I’m a little surprised that they even released this product to market. This felt tip is incredibly difficult to work with. Well, I guess that could depend on the kind of eye liner you’re doing. Y’all know I love to rock my cat eye, so as I expected might be the case, High Drama was not small or sharp enough at the tip to allow for a nice point at the end of my cat eye.
Not only did it limit my cat eye fabulousness, but also it was way too flimsy! For a unique design such as this one, you should feel like you’re bending the tip when applying it, but I almost didn’t even want to use it that’s how much I felt like I was going to break it. Maybe it wouldn’t have been so bad if it was a little stronger.
The Liner Itself
Terrible. Just terrible. Seriously. I don’t know if it’s the tip itself or that the liner isn’t pigmented enough, but I definitely didn’t get that awesome matte black I was looking for. (See “Is it good for anything?”). Yes, the liner is matte, and yes, the liner is black. But it’s nothing like the picture. See for yourself!
As if the lack of pigmentation wasn’t enough, it barely wanted to work. What do I mean? The tip seemed to pick up my eyeshadow… That has never ever happened to me. Sure, some eyeshadow will get on your felt tip, but you can still do what you gotta do. This one seemed to be incapable of working with satin eye shadows (I didn’t use it with matte shadows).
Is it good for anything?
Actually, yes. It is pretty black IF AND ONLY IF you don’t use it without eye shadow and build it up. If you’re going for the classic cat eye with red lip stick, then this eyeliner will do the job for you.
I could go on and on about how much I disliked this eyeliner, but I’ll save us the trouble. The bottom line is DO NOT buy this eye liner. For a much better drugstore eyeliner, go for the Jordana Fabu Liner (heck, get yourself 2 for less than this thing!) or Revlon ColorStay Liner (about $5.99). Those are great drugstore eyeliners that I highly recommend!
