It’s here! It’s here! It’s here! It’s the little secret I’ve been keeping from y’all..
About a month ago, I got this email from Sephora about their new monthly makeup box service! The product won’t be fully released until next year. I believe September is the first month that they’re offering the box, so I was very lucky to be invited. (Thank you Sephora!)
So What is Sephora Play?
The Sephora Play! Box is a monthly subscription box that you’ll receive on your doorstep mid-month that contains 6 hand-selected deluxe samples. These samples can range anywhere from skin care products to hair products and even makeup! And yes, all of the products that you’ll receive in your Sephora Play! The Box is full of prestige (just a fancy word for expensive) products!
I’m sure you’ve heard of some of these kind of subscription boxes like Birchbox, Glossybox, Beauty Army, Beauty Box 5, etc. They’re nothing new, and no, I’ve never made the plunge before. But this is Sephora we’re talking about here!
The Sephora Play! Pass
The box costs $10 a month (plus tax) and with that you get not only 6 deluxe samples (and sometimes other bonus-samples), but you also get a Sephora Play! Pass. I’m not totally sure how it works, since I have yet to go into my local store, but I believe you get a one-on-one session with a makeup artist who will help you with that month’s products. Pretty cool!
And in addition even to the Play! Pass, there is a little book you’ll get that gives you more information about each individual product in your box!
Unboxing Sephora Play!
I thought a video might be nice so y’all can see what the packaging looks like and see my reactions to what was inside!
Products in the Sephora Play! Box
Elizabeth James Nirvana Perfume For Her
I wasn’t too excited when I saw this product, but that’s mostly because I’m really bad about wearing perfume. I only wear it on very special occasions, so this sample will probably last me a really long time. It does smell really good, and it reminds me of a perfume by Celine Dion I used to own.
Marc Jacobs Highliner in Black
I’ve actually already gotten a chance to use this one, and my first impression is that I like it! It’s a very smooth eyeliner, which I love. It’s soft on the eyes, so it makes it a lot easier to apply. As with pretty much any pencil type eyeliner, I would not recommend using it for cat eyes (eyeliner just lining the top lid should be fine). I thought that maybe with as smooth as it is that it would work, but I ended up going back over it with my pencil liquid liner.
Sephora Rouge Infusion
This is a beautiful color. I’m really happy with this choice on Sephora’s part because I think it’s a color that will look good on a wide range of people. I still haven’t gotten a chance to use it on my lips, but in my video, I do put a little swatch on my hand and my first impression is that it’s something of a lip tint. I’ll talk more about this in my full review!
Bumble and Bumble – Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil Primer
This is perhaps the most interesting thing for me in this month’s Play! box. I’ve never used a hair primer – or at least not something that called itself one. I have used things like hair protectants that you put on before you heat style your hair. This one says it softens, detangles, and protects against heat. Again, I haven’t had a change to use it, but if it does all it claims, then this should be a really good one.
GlamGlow Supercleanse
This is my 2nd favorite (next to the Bb Hairdresser’s Primer) because a mud to foam cleanser?! And a black one at that? Actually it’s grey, but it’s such an interesting idea. Applying initially like a mud mask, this product is definitely something I’m excited to try out!
Ole Henriksen Sheer Transformation
Let me start on this one by saying that I’m not really a skin product person. I hate to say it but it’s true. I’m really bad about washing my face and using lotion. I just am. I tried this one a couple nights ago, and I do like it, but I looked it up and it retails at $40, which is more than I’m ever going to pay. It was pretty soft, but I was sad to see at how little this deluxe sample actually contains. Maybe I’m just using it wrong – maybe you need a lot less than I think. Guess I’ll find out when I use my Sephora Play! Pass.
The Play! Pass is one of the reasons why I’m so excited about this service. Not only is it fun and nice to get samples of products every month, but being able to go in store and get makeup artist advice on how to utilize those products. That’s the real value in this subscription service. You don’t have to worry about getting products that you have no idea how to use. Sephora gives you everything that you need!
As I said, this is currently an invite only service. But you can try to get on their wait list here http://www.sephora.com/play
This is by no means a full review, and no worries – I will definitely have a review up in the next couple weeks. I just want adequate time to fully review these neat products!
Will you be subscribing to Play!? If you already have, what do you think about it? Let me know in the comments!
Update – Review number two is here!
