(Note: This post is really a… “how to get started”)
You want people to look at your makeup and think “wow”. You want people you don’t know to compliment your makeup. So what makes really great makeup? Two major things come to mind. Foundation and a smokey eye.
You’re probably thinking “Really?? You basically mean the entire face, and that doesn’t help me”, and no, that’s not what I mean. You don’t have to be amazing at bronzer or blush or even an expert with eye shadow. You don’t have to be able to create a new look on the spot. All you need to do is get a basic foundation routine going and get good a one smokey eye. That’s exactly what I did.
With a basic foundation routine, you can create almost any look. Because really, you can do the same foundation every single time you do your makeup. Now obviously, you’ll see a lot of beauty bloggers do different things for different looks, but you don’t have to do that. If you can get one good foundation routine going you’ll be set.
When getting started, in general I recommend spending a lot of time reading blogs and a lot of time watching YouTube videos. They both help a lot! You’ll learn that there is quite a bit more to makeup than people realize. Here are some foundation routine videos, I’ve watched that might help you get started 🙂
If you really want to understand a little more behind the routine, watch this one!
This one can also get a little complicated, but it’s a great video.
If you have acne problems, then this is your video!
The Perfect Smokey Eye
(The title is a bit of a lie..) Your smokey eye doesn’t have to be perfect! In fact, that’s what I think is great about smokey eyes. All of the blending makes it easy (well easier) to cover up your mistakes. And really, you can do a smokey eye with as little as 3 shadows! And people are always really impressed with a smokey eye. What’s not to love?
If you’re just getting started with eyeshadow, then videos are really going to be your best bet. Here are a few that I’ve used myself. You’ll love them!
This one is by Wayne Goss. I love him! I’ve learned so much about makeup from him, but I would note on this video to stay away from fake lashes. They’re pretty hard to use.
If you’re wanting something, super simple, this is a great one!
This girl is one of my faves! She’s super fun and great at what she does!
Any other advice?
Don’t be afraid! If you find something you like, just go for it! And if you’re mid eyeshadow and it looks terrible, don’t worry. Just go with the flow. Blending is your friend. You’ll learn that it’s easier than you think. And personally, I think that once you get one smokey eye down, you’ll realize that it’s not so bad and be able to watch other tutorials to get even more looks! Good luck 🙂
