Hey y’all! Sorry it’s been a while since I put up a post. I’ve been on a cruise so I’ve been a little busy! But not to worry, I’ve got a lot of good stuff coming your way 🙂
I got asked this question recently, and considering that skin care and looking young as long as possible has become such a huge topic, I thought this was something worth covering.
Does makeup block the sun?
The answer is not so simple. Overall, my answer is yes to an extent. Any makeup you put on your face acts as a physical barrier between your face and the sun’s ultraviolet rays. However, its not a solid, so it doesn’t block the sun like your sunglasses or umbrella might.
The suns rays are often harmful to your skin if you’re not protected. Sure, you might get that luxurious tan, but at what expense? Is that tan worth getting wrinkles sooner? That’s right. The more exposure you have to the sun, the faster your skin ages. Now, I’m not saying to avoid tanning entirely or to avoid going outside. Just be smart about it. Use sunscreen! Just because you use sunscreen doesn’t mean that you won’t tan. In fact using a low spf might only block about half of the UV rays.
So back to makeup. You can get makeup with SPF! Well, at least you buy foundation with SPF. The highest you’ll see is about 20, and keep in mind that your protection could fade throughout the day as your foundation fades. And makeup with SPF tends to have a white cast in photos, so its best to use a non SPF foundation for those special occasions.
So yes, foundations with SPF block some of the sun’s rays, while other makeup provides minimal protection. Hope this provides you with some good info! If you have anything to add, I’d love to hear about it in the comments below 🙂
