Age Appropriate Makeup: High School

Age Appropriate Makeup: High School

Once you’ve reached the high school stage, a lot of things are changing. You’re not a “kid” anymore, and you’re really starting the part of your life where you’ll begin to shape who you’re going to become. You never know what decisions you make now might affect your future.

For me, well I never knew that choosing to take that Computer Science class in my senior year would help me decide what I want to do for the rest of my life. And so. It’s an important stage.

Now that you’re in high school, you might be really curious about makeup. Or maybe it’s your baby. In any case, if you’ve decide it’s time to step it up, let’s do it!

My first advice to anyone wanting to get into makeup (and it doesn’t matter if you’re in high school or if you’re in your 30’s) is to watch YouTube videos. Seriously. A picture’s worth a thousand words, and well a video is worth a million. How you can learn to “do makeup” is to learn by watching and learn by doing.

It’s the same way you learn to dance. Someone shows you how to do it, and then you try to do it, over and over until it’s perfect. Might not sound like the best way, but you’ll be surprised at how quickly your skills can evolve. You don’t have to be an artist – you don’t have to be creative. You can learn 🙂

If you’ve already got the basics of your foundation routine, but you haven’t gone farther than that, I strongly suggest you look into investing a good blush. You don’t have to spend a lot of money, but you want a blush that’s versatile. One you can wear everyday if you want to. Milani (Walgreen’s or CVS) is a great place to start.

Foundation with nothing else can make the skin look kind of dull. Because what you’re doing is making it all one color. By adding in some blush on your cheeks (in an angle along your cheekbones), you’ll add some dimension and color to the face.

But what about eyeshadow? That’s definitely a place to start as well. I don’t recommend going too crazy, but of course, experiment as you wish! I think a great place to start is to learn how to do a basic neutral smokey eye. While it might be a little more eye makeup than most people wear, a neutral smokey eye is pretty tasteful in my opinion.

As far as liner goes, I’d probably stay away from a cat eye until maybe senior year of high school. Lining the upper waterline and mascara should be enough to enhance the eyes.

But let me give you one piece of advice. Don’t line the lower waterline! UNLESS, you’re doing a dramatic look with the full waterline rimmed and liner on the eyelid. Having eyeliner only on the waterline looks strange and un-natural. But that’s just my opinion 🙂
